Help Wanted: Projections of Jobs and Education Requirements Through 2018
Summary
Released by the Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown University, this paper offers a projection of jobs and their associated education requirements to provide guidance in aligning postsecondary educational choices with careers. The authors also lay out a case for why postsecondary education and training is critical. The goal of the report is to help individuals successfully navigate transitions by outlining connections between education, training, and occupations.
Divided into five parts, the paper presents national forecasts of educational demand from 2008 through 2018 and provides economic context for the findings:
- Part 1 details job losses and compares the current recession to previous recessions and the Great Depression.
- Part 2 provides numbers on the total size of U.S. employment during selected years and provides estimates of the educa¬tional demand for job openings by 2018.
- Part 3 presents an occupational forecast from 2008 through 2018, and then gives the edu¬cational demand within various occupations.
- Part 4 describes education demand by industry from 2008 through 2018, and then describes the edu¬cational demand within various industries.
- Part 5 outlines relationships between education and wages and the more complex ties between education, wages, and occupational choice.
The paper concludes with an assessment of the economic and job creation landscapes and emphasizes the need for new technology, postsecondary education and training, and career pathways based on industry rather than occupation as a way to prepare workers and spur economic recovery.
