O*Net Online

Summary

O*NET serves as a leading source for U.S. occupational information. As an online interactive tool for career exploration and job analysis, O*NET lists educational qualifications needed for occupations, has the latest employment and wage data, identifies occupations projected to grow rapidly, and provides important industry information. O*NET Online is based on the O*NET database, which contains information on hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors and is continually updated by surveying a broad range of workers from each occupation, including green jobs and other emerging occupations. For example, in 2009, the National Center for O*NET Development, a federal occupational information resource, developed a system for characterizing green jobs with its Greening of the World of Work report, a resource that can be found on O*NET Online. The database also provides the basis for the Career Exploration Tools, a set of valuable assessment instruments for workers and students looking to find or change careers. O*NET Online is of use to job seekers, workforce development and HR professionals, students, and researchers, among others, and is available to the public at no cost. O*NET was developed under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Labor ‘s Employment and Training Administration through a grant to the North Carolina Employment Security Commission.
