Promoting Learner Transitions to Postsecondary Education and Work: Developing Academic Readiness Skills from the Beginning

Summary

Released by the CAELA Network, this brief describes the importance of teaching adult learners postsecondary and workplace readiness skills to transition to and participate successfully in higher levels of education or employment. The target audience is state adult education staff, program administrators, and practitioners who work with adult English language learners (ELLs). The brief details the results of a recent survey which examined instructors’ perceptions of the skills learners need to be successful in academic programs. A review of the literature on the skills adult ELLs need to transition to academic study and employment, and the time it takes students to develop those skills, is also provided.

Additionally, the authors offer examples of activities and strategies that can be used at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of ESL instruction to help learners develop these skills. The examples provided aim to assist practitioners with developing activities for students that lead to a deeper understanding of content, increased critical thinking, and greater independence. Each activity lists the associated academic skills and strategies, along with related principles.
